Steve established the art-music label Rattle Records with two friends in 1991. In its first year the label released two seminal recordings, PESKY DIGITS by Gitbox Rebellion, and SONGS FOR HEROES by From Scratch. In 1994 they released the ground-breaking TE KU TE WHE by Hirini Melbourne and Richard Nunns.
The label's output between 1991 and 2009 was relatively modest (an average of one release a year), but among them were many critically acclaimed award-winning albums by major New Zealand artists, such as Dan Poynton, Jack Body, John Psathas, Gillian Whitehead, and Michael Houstoun.
In 2009 the label established the Rattle Jazz Series and increased its output to an album a month. In 2013 it was bought by Victoria University of Wellington, which ensured the label's survival and enables it to continue supporting New Zealand's best art-music composers and performers.
