sometimes, i start with a theme and structure the music around this feeling or concept. that’s usually when i’m kinda going through it IRL and need to process a particular emotion. those mixes come hard and fast and are a bit of a treasure hunt to find the right songs to fit the energy.
other times, i don’t have a clear vision on what i want the mix to communicate, and so i start with the music. i’ll buy some new music and start toying around with how those might fit with songs already in my collection. piecing together songs until i notice the theme emerging.
this mix was the latter.
at one point during the construction of the mix, the theme just leapt out and smacked me upside the head…
this is a mix about being out of sync with circadian rhythms. think: staying up all night til you see the sunrise, waking up at 2 am and not being able to get back to sleep, taking a nap at noon and waking up to an alarm at 2pm.
it's that bleary-eyed, fuzzy feeling where the hours seem to stretch differently and you look at the clock disoriented by the warping passage of time. it's being kept awake by the blue light from your phone while you're doom scrolling in bed at 3 am. it's trying to function normally the week after daylight savings has your internal rhythm just sliiightly off.
it’s a bit of a weird theme to enter an ecstatic dance with - usually, the themes are less… idk? nebulous? it’s not so much an emotion as it is a vibe, and it was really cool to see people just go with it and see what showed up for them. i love that ecstatic dance dallas allows me to lean into my creative edges and play around with stretching my own container.
