I am delighted to present a new special unmixed vinyl only series: Hidden Gems.
For over 40 years, I have been passionately collecting records from different genres. In this series, I would like to present tracks on vinyl from my collection that you may not know or have never heard in this remix version, or simply haven't heard in a long time. It is an unmixed series where the tracks take centre stage. It starts with a passion from my youth in the late 80s and early 90s: Hip Hop/Rap/R&B/New Jack Swing. The oldest record in this session is more than 40 years old. It's an instrumental version of Michael Jackson's Thriller, released in 1984 as a B-side on another maxi single by MJ. You can hear its age, with the occasional crackle, as it's a vinyl that's been around for quite a few years 😊

Dear Dan, thank you so much for your fantastic feedback and for taking the time to listen. The biggest challenge here was the condition of some of the records. In my youth, I didn't take very good care of these records, and even after cleaning them, many were unusable. This is currently also the biggest challenge in preparing Volume 2 with dance tracks from that era. All the tracks in this session, except for the last one by Michael Jackson, are original records from that time, which I bought myself back then, and are therefore between 30 and 40 years old. I only bought the Michael Jackson record a while ago, and it was in surprisingly good condition, even though it's 42 years old. Thank you for your great support, and I wish you a wonderful week. 🫶🤗🙏
@Phil_Moreno Hi Phil, if the vast majority of the records are purchases from the timeframe of original release, this makes the session even more special. The records that you selected sound very good, and it's very impressive that you have so few pops and crackles given what you describe about condition. @Pure_Analog Hi Dan, this worked with the records I used in the session. Unfortunately, I couldn't use everything I still have at home. Some records were still unusable even after cleaning. I bought many of these records from other genres digitally over the years, so storage and care weren't really important to me. I never thought I'd be able to play them again 😀 Now I know better 🙈

Michael Jackson lived in New York City at different points in his life, most notably renting a townhouse on the Upper East Side and spending time in a 63rd-floor apartment at Trump Tower. While primarily based in California, he rented an apartment in Manhattan in 1977 while filming The Wiz and frequented the city throughout his career.

Upper East Side Townhouse: He lived in a six-story Beaux-Arts townhouse at 4 East 74th Street. The 12,745-square-foot home was later sold for $32

For me, Michael Jackson's album Thriller is one of the best things ever made. Of course, thanks in no small part to the great Quincy Jones. When I listen to the track Thriller today and imagine that it was created in 1982, it's simply incredible. To this day, this track sounds breathtaking and unique.

Long Island City Loft: In 1977, her family bought a warehouse loft in Long Island City, Queens, where she lived above Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth of the Talking Heads.

P.M. Dawn was an American hip-hop and R&B duo formed in 1988 in Jersey City, New Jersey. The group consisted of brothers Attrell "Prince Be" Cordes and Jarrett "DJ Minute Mix" Cordes, who were both natives of Jersey City. They are best known for their 1991 hit "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss".
Origin: Formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1988.
Members: Brothers Attrell "Prince Be" Cordes and Jarrett "DJ Minutemix" Cordes.
Background: Raised in New Jersey, they were heavily influenced by their stepfather, George Brown, a drummer for Kool & the Gang.

The Name: The group was named after the Sugar Hill district in Harlem by producer Sylvia Robinson to give them immediate "street cred" and associate them with the affluent, culturally significant Black neighborhood.
The Discovery: Sylvia Robinson discovered Big Bank Hank while he was working at Crispy Crust, a pizza shop in Englewood, NJ. He would rap along to tapes while making pizzas, which caught the attention of Robinson's son.
The Label: Their record label, Sugar Hill Records, was also based in Englewood, where the group recorded their historic 1979 hit, "Rapper's Delight".
Although they were "Jersey boys," their music was inspired by the burgeoning hip-hop scene at Bronx block parties and New York nightclubs, which they successfully brought to the global mainstream.

Thank you so much for this great background information. I've been a huge 3rd Bass fan from the very beginning. I chose this track from their brilliant "The Cactus" album. I've listened to that album countless times. I spent a long time deciding which track to choose and found "Soul in the Hole" intriguing because it's not their most well-known track, but I think the sampling is ingenious. For me, 3rd Bass was unfortunately completely underrated, especially in Europe. Their sound was fantastic.
