Welcome to "Metropolis" ... a journey into the world of drum & bass. I've been wanting to put out a d&b set for a long time, but found myself getting sidetracked with house and other genres ... Growing up in London in the 90's I heard a lot of drum & bass on pirate radio stations such as Rude FM, Flex FM and Kool FM ... I started off listening to the harder side of d&b and jungle around 1994, and from 1996 onwards I also became addicted to the more atmospheric and soulful d&b produced by masters such as LTJ Bukem, Adam F, Goldie and London Elektricity ... To this day I still listen to the plethora of classic releases from the "Good Looking" record label, and of course Goldie's aptly named masterpiece "Timeless" ... So, if you like your drum & bass, this may be the set for you! ... Plenty of twists and turns in this set ... some liquid, some atmospheric, and some darker beats towards the end ... ENJOY!!!!

I’m really enjoying the variance in DnB sub-genres you’ve mixed here. It all flows together nicely, thanks for sharing 😎

Steve James

Thank you Paul! ... I tried not to limit this session to only one style of D&B, so there's some nice liquid and soulful stuff, and some darker soundscapes towards the end ... Thank you for tuning in. I'm glad you enjoyed it!! Cheers! 😎🎧🎵👊

Yep this is the business ... LTJ Bukem, Adam F, Goldie and London Elektricity ... Pershay. I got a cassette tape from LTJ Bukem off the streets in London in 1993. Complete with hand drawn cover. One of my all time favourite mixes. I've tried to model my mixing on his style ever since ... lots of samples dotted over the top. I like hearing the DJ in the mix and that's what you get with Bukem, especially when you add MC Conrad. If you get a chance you may like my vinyl 'Junglin mix' I did a while back. Its got my all time favourite D&B tracks in one mix (no pressure). Having said all this, I love this mix you've done. This is truly music for your head and your feet ... the jazzy nature of it for your head, and percussion and bass for your feet ... and the atmospheric vocals and synths hit you somewhere in between. Thanks once again Steve.

Hi Jaysen ... Thank you for taking the time to have a listen to this session, and for leaving such a great comment ... LTJ Bukem is an absolute legend, both as a producer and a DJ, and I have no doubt that the tape you bought back in 1993 was and still is fantastic ... I've always been a huge fan of his work, especially the "Progression Sessions" he did with MC Conrad. One of my favourites was a live set he did with Conrad in Boston in 2001 ... Absolutely sublime ... And then there are all the other legends such as Goldie, Adam F, Photek, Peshay, PFM, Doc Scott, London Elektricity, High Contrast, Makoto, Nookie etc ... I've always been a huge fan of the various different styles of D&B, whether it's liquid, ambient, atmospheric or dark ... I don't often mix D&B, but I listen to a lot of it at home. Having enjoyed putting this one together, I decided to make it a series, so I will be doing more of these in 2022 ... I will definitely check out your vinyl jungle mix at some point. It's really nice to listen to D&B in order to have a change from all the house sets ... Thank you again for tuning in mate, and I hope you enjoy the upcoming weekend! Cheers!! 😎🎧🎵👊

Thank you Musik King!! ... This one is a much higher tempo than all my other mixes ... Maybe a little too fast for some, but I'm glad you enjoyed the journey! ... Thank you for taking the time to listen, and have a great week! Cheers!!!! 😎🎧🎵

Well played indeed!! I listen to a few DnB sets each week on Mixcloud, and like you find it a nice break from house (& techno, which i listen to a lot). I lived with a few lads in Leeds in the mid to late 90s and was really into it for a while - especially the 'intelligent' DnB as well as the jump up and ragga. Now i prefer the liquid style, and I really enjoyed this set. Few highlights for me: Nookie - Love Me (and the fantastic transition to New Day, Wheels (love the darkness/moodiness), Donald Wilborn's Manila - what a beautiful track, it was my favourite part of the set when LSB/DRS Frozen and the soothing vocal kicks in just under half way through, Scar - Torn Apart with its nice rolling beats. Truth is, i loved all of it, and knowing your other work I am not surprised at how well mixed it was. Any DJ who hasn't tried mixing DnB should give it a go, it really does test your skills, and I have the utmost respect for the producers and DJs in this genre. Top stuff Steve 🙏👊

Steve James

Thanks Tim!!! ... I know you're a D&B connoisseur, so I was sure you'd enjoy this one ... As you know, I do like to mix a multitude of different genres. It keeps things interesting, and tests your skills as a DJ ... The D&B scene back in the 90's was incredible. I like both the hardcore sound and the "intelligent" sound pioneered by the likes of LTJ Bukem. The "Good Looking" record label released so much top quality D&B back in the day, which has stood the test of time ... You picked out some great tracks there ... You can never go wrong with Nookie, and the LSB/DRS track remixed by the mighty Calibre is a top tune. Donald Wilborn's "Manila" is also one of my standouts, and also Commix "Be True" ... I took it a little bit darker for the last quarter, with an explosive finish!!!! ..... Thank you again for listening, and I'm glad you enjoyed it mate ... I will be doing more D&B sets in the future!! Have a great week mate! 😎🎧🎵👊
