Hip-hop as both a musical genre and a culture was formed during the 1970s, when block parties became increasingly popular in New York City, particularly among ethnic minority youth residing in the Bronx where the earliest hip-hop music was performed live, at house parties and block party events. Traditionally, many inner city block parties were actually held illegally, and would incorporate DJs, who would connect their equipment to power lines and perform at venues such as public basketball courts and parks, where the DJs would play popular genres of music, especially funk and soul records. Due to the positive reception, DJs began isolating the percussive breaks of popular songs, a technique which was common in Jamaican dub music and was largely introduced into New York by immigrants from the Caribbean, gaining influences from African American and Latin American music. Cheers Ben, had a lot fun doing this mix. I've done a few sets like this before and the challenge for me is to not play the same old tracks you always hear with mixes like this. He's back with another block-tastic audio excursion!!! ... How goes it Apache slice? ... Hope all is good ... Mate, this one's a proper treat served up for the old school heads!! ... Just the photo alone gives you that "back in the day" vibe, and it was always going to be a set that delivered the goods ... Whole load of tasty beats on this one, and it's always fun listening out for the samples of those old classics ... You managed to pack a lot into this set, with no less than 40 tracks ... so of course I can't namedrop all of the ones I liked, as there are simply too many!! ... But I can certainly put the shine on a few that caught my ear ... some of which were classics I hadn't heard for years, and a couple were new to me ... Loved all of those Jim Sharp tracks, plus the bonafide Method Man classic "All I Need", which I haven't heard for a long time ... Next up is Run DMC "Down With The King", and then after that "Battle" from Gang Starr. I'm an absolute Gang Starr junkie, so I always love hearing Guru doing his thing on a Preemo beat, and I remember this track very well from back in the day ... Coincidentally next month will be 15 years since Guru passed away ... man the time just flies ... Next up of course it's Tribe with "Award Tour" ... another timeless classic that needs to be dug out of the crates from time to time 🔥 ... I also enjoyed the head nodding funky groove of Smokin' The Jazz "Tha Shiznit", Dexter Wansel "Theme From The Planets", Mandrill "Mango Meat", Smoove "Take It Easy", and the classic "Long Train Runnin" from Doobie Brothers ... Oh and how could I forget The Magnificent Jazzy Jeff!!! ... There's just NOTHING like the old school!!!!!! ... Head nodding, funky, groovy, raw beats and breaks with witty yet educational rhymes ... the 80's and 90's were just untouchable, and of course the 70's when it was all in its infancy ... I don't know how hip hop turned into such a train wreck of a genre these days, but it is what it is ... at least we still have thousands of old school gems to enjoy from the golden era ... and there are still a few underground artists putting out tunes with that old school sound, so it's not all bad news by any means ... but still, nothing like back in the day!! ... And it's always nice to hear a hip hop mix on this platform (or anything other than house, for that matter) ... I love house, but I can't listen to it all day long ... I need that variety!!!! ... Hip hop was my first love, so I gotta have my dose of "boom bap" on the daily, and you've certainly provided plenty of that here ... The whole set flowed very nicely mate. You dropped the finest gems, and of course the mixing was oh so tight!! ... Well it has to be really ... hip hop is a very unforgiving genre when it comes to mixing ... things can go from bad to worse real quick if you're not on the ball ... so a quadruple like for those blends 👌 ... A perfectly executed session!!! ... I've been travelling quite a bit lately, so haven't uploaded anything for a while, but should be back on the case in April, all being well ... We shall see ... Yeah I dug deep on this one, it wasn't supposed to go over an hour but I was enjoying myself so I went into overtime. As you said there's so much good choonage from those early days it was inevitable that the track list was going to be extensive. Although when you say 40 tracks it almost sounds like I was cutting them up super fast. It didn't feel that way at the time but there was the occasional quick mix in fairness. Some doozys you've picked out there mate, although it would be difficult not to ;-) Yeah I don't recall a Gang Starr track I didn't like, and the flow of Guru was instantly recognizable. I'm probably wrong but I always felt Premier doesn't get even nearly enough credit for his productions (outside his peers of course). The sheer volume of classics and hits is surely unsurpassed. Could be a good idea for a series that. Anyway, the less said about the hip hop of today the better probably. The commercialization of it has made it nearly unrecognizable, and that includes some of these so called legends from back in the day. I used to be a fan of lots of these guys but people like Eminem in particular has sold out so hard I have to question if my eyes are playing tricks on me. And Snoop is following closely behind him. Sadly, some of these guys are not who they pretend to be and they'll do anything for the cheque. Enough of that nonsense anyway, I'm glad to see you'll be back on the case in April Steve.
