DJ Willy LeMay, long term (6years) residency at Boston's premier seminal post-punk nightclubs of the 1980's, SPIT/AXIS. SPIT was to Boston as Danceteria was to New York. I was the DJ's DJ according to some well respected peers. That's me honking my own horn!
I started spinning at a small venue in Lowell MA called the Foxtail Lounge in 1980. In those days, post-punk ruled the airwaves but with the emergence of the Second British Invasion and bands like New Order, Human League and Depeche Mode, I had to drive 35 miles into Boston to get those records. Internet? Just a wet dream at that point. NME and Melody Maker were the import papers of record. They always had lots of reviews but no way to hear the records unless you ordered them. Thankfully, I made some good connections at some great record stores in and around Boston - Rock It in Saugus, Newbury Comics and Strawberries in Boston and Cambridge, as well as the Harvard Coop and Main St Records in North Hampton, Mass.
