Who are We?
One aspect of this Mix is its progress from we-all-together Tribalism to Me and the self, from outward to inward. From the tribal beats of Jamaica Mnanda, the full-on North African Gnawa of Electric Jalaba, the Zamrock of the Ngozi Family and the indigenous Colombian chant of Lion’s Drums to the interior landscapes of dub and jazz from Norway (Tortusa), Brazil (Marcos Resende & Index). But maybe that’s too simple a view – somewhere at the climax of the Mix we join Anansy Cisse in the Malian Sahara for a deep meditation on aloneness, and it does conclude with a lively burst of Anatolian Rock and Italian Rai. Everything turns on Bentality who effect the shift from We to Me by invoking a gospel call. Finally let us put in a word for local world music label No Wahala Sounds (Kakai Kilonza) and Rhythm Passport from whose excellent free monthly Mix we borrowed Nuri and Bentality – check them both out.
