Educator S.L. Young shares teaching strategies that emphasize student collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and communication. Young encourages students to be active, not passive, learners. Through a "team-based, non-threatening learning environment," students develop the confidence to perceive academic challenges as opportunities for growth, work productively with others, and value human worth. Young is the president and founder of Saving Our Communities at Risk Through Educational Services (SOCARTEs) and he has taught a variety of business courses for nearly a decade. He has spoken to hundreds of at-risk high school and college students about overcoming educational challenges and during a four-year partnership with the Arlington County Detention Facility, starting in 2013, he taught over 300 inmates introductory business courses, including ones on soft skills and life skills management.
