Holy glitches that won't stop, mang!
As soon as I saw your test uploads, I knew exactly what they were about.
You'll be pleased to know I enjoyed your show glitch-free today on Mixcloud... only because I have a good hypothesis on the source of the problem...
Obviously, I was mortified last week when I kept hearing unwanted "artifacts" in FD71...
...launched into investigation mode...
...confirmed source file was good...tried browser other than Chrome on my work laptop (Edge) --> nogo...tried browser on my phone (Opera) --> MC audio good! ...back to the work laptop, confirmed bandcamp audio was good, as well as hearthis and soundcloud... issue is isolated to only Mixcloud streaming...
...on home laptop, had listened to some MC early last week (didn't notice any audio problems)...allowed scheduled Windows updates to install...then, the night after noticing the work LT had audio issues, I tried MC again on the home LT and snap, crackle, and pop invaded my ears!
2 + 2 = a correlation to a "Microsoft Corporation AudioProcessingObject Driver Update" which only affects Mixcloud streaming. Since there are no Windows updates on my Android phone, MC streaming still sounds fine.
...So, it's just a matter of time for Mixcloud to update some old driver of theirs to one that will play nice with the new Windows drivers. Myth or reality? Who knows?!

btw, the rain did come for me today... even knocked out power at this someones house for an hour. All is good now. Hope you are well too, P (despite all the technical frustrations).

dude, I really appreciate that treatise on the complexities and I like your logic too (you could be on the money there - or, at least, it's convinced me!).
I need to have a listen again to this mix here and see whether the small pops & stutters are still there or not (...a couple of peeps have said it played fine for them). so lets see!
but in the meantime (and more importantly) all spare digits & appendages are crossed here that the weather stays on the right side of not too troublesome for you there Al.

I'm happy to report, from my work computer this morning, the krakle is GONE! Mixcloud must've gotten their update and their drivers are now in sync with ours (at least mine, anyway). Standing down red alert.
Btw, I've been using a 1 year old show that easily exposed the "artifacts" during its first few minutes, "La Divina Commedia" by The Kraken.
I believe it is now safe to listen to FD71 when you have the time : )

I did a little research earlier and mixcloud HQ uploads are around 160kbps (which means compression in any event) using a transcoder and HQ also adds post process ‘enhancements’ to try to boost & make the quality appear better.
I’ve not seen any problems like this upload here has before and I’m wondering whether they might have changed transcoder and/or the enhancement elements (which could produce weirdness potentially - boosting the wrong things here and there for instance).
I don’t mind a drop in sound quality (for streamed content it’s to be expected) but it’s frustrating because you don’t want to share something that plays back worse than your original because of added glitch of one kind or another (plus, for me, getting back up and running after a laptop death in March, I had to check a load of other things to make sure it wasn’t to do with my new setup). I also reuploaded my .wav to check it wasn’t simply a one-off and then also converted to m4a at 320kbps and uploaded that - both had similar problems.
the soundcloud upload I did earlier is the proof in the pudding here - slight drop in fidelity (no problem) but no ‘bonus’ glitch added.
if the puzzle here was free of cost I wouldn’t be at all bothered🧩. makes me laugh that my low quality upload last month plays back better than a high quality one 😅…

Definitely first world, but when you're spending a lot of time trying to create something it can't help but be frustrating:) I'm wondering if it would be better to upload mp3 rather than WAV, although I seem to recall having the same problem uploading shows in mp3 format.......

I usually upload wavs.
I searched up yesterday and read that some people recently think m4a (at 320kbps) works most 'sympathetically' with the transcoder and HQ enhancements, but I honestly didn't notice much improvement when I tried that.
I've converted to mp3 in the past a couple of times and then uploaded, but I think all you achieve is some elected compression before the upload then sees some further compression (...maybe).
to be honest, I'm not quite savvy enough to be certain on any of this either!🤣

so I listened to my actual recorded wav file.
it plays back nicely enough with zero glitches, stutters or pops - which is good news and because I'm still proofing my "reincarnated" system, reconstituted library & set-up and really would prefer to avoid any unexpected Rubik's cubes 🤪
which means something is happening at the upload stage or after that...
this is my first upload since last month (which was fine).
I uploaded this mix again just now ("test upload - nothing to see here") - seems maybe to have less issues but does have issues all the same (and in different places).
happy enough chatting with myself here, but anyone else noticed any issues recently?

@papamango You aren't alone, P. I spent a couple of hours editing my latest using audacity, and making sure the tracks from old Cds were the same volume as from more recent ones, only to find that after uploading their volume is once again lower:( Really frustrating. I checked the saved file before uploading and everything was fine. I had thought the problem was caused when normalising after editing, so only normalised immediately after uploading the file to audacity, not at the end, but something happens when uploading to mixcloud (which also took several minutes, possibly because I have an old laptop?). I'm not technical so need everything to run smoothly or I'm left frustrated that what I'm sharing isn't the quality I would like......

Absolutely fantastic show Papa. Loved every moment of it and happy to report it played perfectly with no glitches. I know that platform had serious playback issues over the past week or so. I know many who received confirmation from Mixcloud support that there was technical issues with playback and that their engineers were working on it. Looks like they may have sorted it out !!!
