Back in the glorious haze of the mid-1990s, I did a modern rock show on 91.9 FM KCSS Turlock — broadcasting straight from the basement of California State Stanislaus with nothing but a wall of CDs, a battered Technics turntable, and a dream, spinning the loud, the weird, and the tragically underappreciated
My idea of a good time? Cranking Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine at unsafe volumes while arguing that Ned’s Atomic Dustbin deserved a Nobel Prize in basslines. I’ve got a soft spot for shoegaze and Britpop oddities like Cranes, Lush, and Echobelly, and I will absolutely derail a conversation to praise Velocity Girl or Shallow. Somewhere between The Lemonheads and late-night static lies my sweet spot.
Now I’m dusting off the archives, reanimating the sound of flannel, Doc Martens, and Zima regrets. I’ve uploaded all my old shows I could find and may be able to hunt down some in the possession of others.
Rock over London, rock on Chicago. KCSS: It whips the llama’s ass!
