DJ EmmaEffa made her DJ debut in Washington DC quite accidentally. In 2017, after an appearance as a guest on TurnUp Before The Turn Up she was invited to co-host the shoe. Shortly thereafter, she was asked to produce her own segment. In December 2017, she debuted as a solo radio personality on the online radio podcast that she produces called Love and Funk With Maria Fenton on ClubPlugRadio powered by WinDCRadio. In early 2018, the resident dj for her set was not able to make the set. For a short period of time, guest dj's filled in but eventually Maria Fenton found herself without a DJ and that's how DJ EmmaEffa (named after Maria's boutique fashion brand House of EmmaEffa).
