What’s in a name? When it comes to my DJ name quite a lot, I have cerebral palsy, I shake and I DJ: DJ CP Shakes.
When I was 33 I said to myself, you’ve always wanted to DJ so just try it.
I’m not going to lie, if technology wasn’t where it was today I could not DJ, my hands and a vinyl needle produces quite the scratch and not one a DJ wants to be associated with. However, I’ve always had an intuition of what songs should go where in a playlist.
DJing with shakes provides its own set of challenges. I had to find my comfort zone by pushing myself into zones of discomfort. When it got difficult I returned to the music and that is the lesson, music lifts us up, inspires us to keep going, to be better. Music didn’t abandon me and I repaid that kindness by getting better at DJing.
I love my family, friends and DJing. DJing seeped into my being so…what’s in a name? Maybe nothing, maybe everything but in my case two parts of myself I couldn't separate from my identity.
