Derrick James Maddox known as Derrick J was born on March 6, 1987 in Utica, New York.

Growing up on a diverse mix of R&B, Rock and Soul provided by his mother’s tape collection, Derrick J is hard to pin down musically. Inspired by his family’s love of music, Derrick J took up the drums at the age of 12. As his interest for music grew he decided to try his hand at something completely different. He began with an iPhone and an app called iDJ. As his skill set progressed, Derrick J’s curiosity peaked and that was how it started.
