“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.”
- Anais Nin
Music manifesting a syncretic approach to music making. This isn't a mix of traditional world music, nor polished world pop -- hence the admittedly elusive (but real) term "outernational." I use it to describe artists, often working in collaboration, drawing from their own culture(s) to create distinctive music across genres, from -- from pop, rock, hip hop, jazz, soundtracks, indie music, and more.
This is fourth in a series of 10 mixes of 2025 favorites. The selections reflect a personal, exploratory approach to discovery and curation, with artists and tracks that tend to fall outside typical “best of” lists.
The mix is timestamped and the tracklist is in the first comment.

Great listen with great variety! You really brought it home with those last five. I have to check out Sonny and the Sunsets, and a lot of these others new to me.
Glad you liked how I wrapped the mix up -- often that can be pretty tricky, as I try to sequence favorite tracks that didn't organically fall into an earlier place in the mix. It's probably the part of these 2025 mixes that I change the most as I'm settling into a final sequence...
🤩

heavy!
when this song kicked in I yelled to Georgia (in the other room in the bath with the door open) "I think we've just gotten on the Brazilian Love Boat!"
simply a superb selection once again Vodem! I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish and it means still more to add to my wishlists (...I only knew 3 artists from this crowd already - Goat, Little Simz and Astatke...). brilliant. P🥭🙏
