Birthdays, anniversaries and a memorial combine with new releases to make this episode of Radio Eclectus a memorable one. We honor the 85th birthday of minimalism’s chief instigator La Monte Young with a classic (and scarce) performance from Fall 1964. We bid a reluctant farewell to Jon Gibson, noting his contributions to classic minimalism. Our “50 years ago in the avant-garde” feature surveys new recordings of Penderecki and Schuller works unveiled in 1970, as well as excerpts from a noteworthy Corea/Braxton/Holland recording session and a major Stockhausen piece that are celebrating their semicentennials.
Along the way we sample new and upcoming releases featuring Anne LeBaron, Ed Bennett, Kaija Saariaho, Gao Ping, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jim Haynes, Kaze & Ikue Mori, Monica Pearce, Chris Thornborrow, Mike Khoury & Ben Hall, Quatuor Molinari, and a Northwest-centered combo with Monika Khot, Daniel Menche, Faith Coloccia, Aaron Turner & William Fowler Collins. Radical new music!
