This all-new edition of Radio Eclectus brings you the latest recordings from Harrison Birtwistle, Wolfgang Rihm, Bryn Harrison and Bernhard Lang (for his 65th birthday). We explore different approaches to musical repetitiveness—the good kind—with samples of stuttering Lang (abetted by Burroughs and Sun), obsessive Marcel Zaes (in collaboration with Yarn/Wire), heterostatic Harrison (via the premiere recording of an important precursor to his much-discussed Piano Quintet) and the 50th anniversary of an Anthony Braxton sax solo that anticipates Roscoe Mitchell’s notorious Nonaah. We dive into Rihm’s newly-recorded Jadgen und Formen (the most compelling orchestral work from him in many years), while Birtwistle is represented by a substantial new chamber piece. A Cindy Cox composition for piano and sampler rounds out the playlist.
