Macushla Machree entered English in the first half of the 19th century. Macushla is phonetic Irish Gaelic of mo chuisle, “my pulse,” or more romantically, “my heartbeat, my sweetheart, darling.” In full, a chuisle mo chroí, literally, “pulse of my heart.” Macushla loves the beats, to raise a pulse.
