Gardland is a collaborative techno project between Alex Murray and Mark Smith. Gardland seeks to disengage electronic music from the safety of the cliché by relying on improvisation and live hardware based performances. Much electronic music has lost a willingness to take risks, leading to tracks that merely service audience expectations. Gardland embraces the unknown: each performance is unique, reflecting Murray and Smith’s collaborative spirit at the time. While the sonic template is doggedly rhythmic and atonal, melody and foreign timbres move the sound beyond the techno spectrum of grey industrial tone colours. Gardland aims to break new ground in the Sydney scene with new sounds and a type of live experience rare in the city.
