SYNC BUTTON – CHEATING OR EVOLVING?

by Benny Mc - WOH Records

Technology has made the world smaller, at its purest the technology revolution has made everyone’s life better in some way shape, or form. From watching TV, holidays, leisure, access to data, and friends the list is endless. We use it every single day at work you use PCs and Excel spreadsheets as opposed to reams of paper and filing and figuring out our basic math was a skill whereas in excel etc- it is a split second.

So why do we always have the same argument with music, I remember an early queen album stating “No synthesizers used” then arguably their best work was embracing technology and using it to their advantage.

Watch Mark Ronson’s sound of music on Apple breaks down the best in breakthrough technology and what songs were made using that technology, It was an eye opener to see and hear some of all-time classics from the 70s, and 80s using drum machines, etc-. something unheard of before then. It is all a bit crazy

That brings us into the SYNC debate, I recently chatted with the amazing STRAWBERRY LADY about this, and it sparked a wide question for me

Is it that bad people use what the maker of tech is the best version of the available and commonly used function?

I used Traktor like Joris Voorn, Steve Lawler, Carl Cox, and some of my heroes I have watched their sets and regardless of the tech been blown away with the music, timing, song selection, and overall crowd control

I don’t use sync as I enjoy the challenge of being in full control, but I use the loop for every single song introduction. I loop constantly, is that as bad? I find looping enables me to tweak the BPM before entering the mix and then being surprised it is not perfect, anyone who has seen me play I rarely make mistakes unless it is 10 pm and there has been too much fun had then it is anyone’s game lol
My advice would be don’t look at the technology, listen to the music, some of the best DJs I have seen over the years did not have the technical skill but had the ear for music, could read a crowd, and overall focused on what is important – THE MUSIC

But I do get my view is not one for everyone and it is an open debate.

PS I have played with Vinyl a long time ago but can say I never mastered it so I am a digital DJ all the way for the last 20 years

Not in the slightest would it bother me 🙌🙌 Just like there's too focus on beat matching...Can understand the importance of it, but explains a lot why my mixes are so choppy, because of the selections..but who walks into Clubs and says..that song didn't match the last one..no one ever...too busy enjoying and dancing away 💃🏻💥🍃🎵💃🏻 to care a jot if every track played matches the next 🙌🙌

I firmly believe if people don't like your choices/methods as a DJ there's plenty of other streams ,so turn off and leave each DJ do what makes them comfortable and provide the best sound for their listeners. This rant was sponsored by War on House Radio

haha love it J Man but you are not wrong either - turn it off and go somewhere else not everyone can buy the best equipment either so they play within there means

Hey Benny 😊 that was a good interesting read 🙌🙌 Maybe there's a bit of DJ snobbery and politics playing a part in ppls opionings when it comes to the, Sync. I'm no DJ, but I know what I like when I hear it, and I've never used Sync in thr few mixes I've done. As you can hear, if you've had a listen. There's no expectations with me, I'm not in the Game..it's purely fun, for listening pleasure. I like them, if others do, then its a bonus 💥💥 As a listener, I dont cast judgement if DJs use Sync, it's a personal choice surely? If Sync is there to use, why not use it? There's a lot of focus when you all stream, the music, entertaining your listeners while mixing, if Sync makes life a little easier, why not?...For me, its s all about the Music, be it Vynil or Digital, the atmosphere, the buzz, the DJs without ego. That's why I tune in 💯🎶👌 Hear you Friday! 😁💥🎵💥🎵💥🎵💥

If you did not see the DJ / were in a club and had the best night ever and then someone said oh he used Beat Sync - would you care? I wouldn't

The only part that drives me is I like the challenge to beat mix, execute mixes on time and make the mix the best it could be and put my stamp on it - but that's my preference and what drives me to everyone else - do what you feel is best for you!!
