Japanese persimmons, Diospyros kaki L., were introduced into the USA from Japan by Admiral Perry who found the fruit expanding on the coast of Southern Japan in 1851.
A lot of the early Japanese persimmon introductions in 1828 were grown from seed in Washington, DC, however were unsuccessful, due to the uncommonly chilly winters months experienced throughout that duration.
