I grew up in a small farming village on the outskirts of the capital of Angola, Luanda. A 45 minute walk to the ocean,
Eco Campo was a community of a few hundred living happily under the tropical sun, growing our own food, raising
animals, fishing, dancing, caring for one another’s .
The spiritual life of the village was not only inward-looking or serious though. It was fully imbued with
joy. The joy of letting down all guards, allowing filters to dissolve, and freely expressing aliveness. It is the joy of
dance, of hours spent letting music move me as it will, of disappearing from the world of thought and self-conscious
concern, of fully entering the stream of sound
To this day, my favorite way to spend time is enjoying good food, playing music, and dancing with my loved ones.
In my family, we all know the songs of our country, the traditional melodies and rhythms, the joy of shared heritage,
of storytelling, of legend.
