Operation Neptune

Operation Neptune was the naval component of the larger D-Day invasion (Operation Overlord) on June 6, 1944, which was the Allied amphibious assault to liberate France from Nazi Germany. It involved nearly 7,000 vessels, which transported over 132,000 troops to the five designated Normandy beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The operation's success, though achieved at a high cost, was a crucial turning point in World War II, beginning the end of Nazi occupation in Europe.
Estimates on how many soldiers died on D-Day have varied over the years. However, recent figures by the US National D-Day Memorial Foundation estimate up to 5,000 Allied and up to 9,000 German troops died on D-Day.
