Operation Chastise (16–17 May 1943), or the "Dambusters Raid," was a daring RAF Bomber Command mission targeting German dams with specialized "bouncing bombs" to cripple Ruhr valley war industry. Led by Guy Gibson’s 617 Squadron, the raid breached two main dams, causing extensive flooding, yet cost 53 aircrew lives and killed ~1,300 civilians.
