Let‘s not forget that ELVIS PRESLEY only "loaned" HOUND DOG from BIG MAMA THORNTON, pictured here in the middle. She recorded the song on the Peacock label three years before PRESLEY laid hands on this classic. I.m.h.o. THORNTON offered the much better version. This great shot is from circa 1965 and was taken by JIM MARSHALL. No matter what I really LOVE these tunes! Other persons on this photo (as far as I could identify them) are James Cotton, Otis Spann, Samuel Lawhorn, Luther Johnson and of course Muddy Waters. To quote the latter: This is "stuff you gotta watch"!

Top selection, loved it. Especially the Vi Redd song, didn't know her before. Thanks!

The Soul Preacher

Thanks. I featured her some years ago. If you ever have the chance to lay your hands on her album LADY SOUL you should buy it right away. It's really a stunner!
First track of this comp is from the same album:

KING SIZED PAPA stopped me in my "tracks" - not only because of the power in her voice but because of the lyrics. Found out that Julia Lee was banned in 1941 in Kansas City clubs because she was branded as too "risque"!
Apparently she performed King Size Papa in 1949 for President Harry Truman at the White House.
She had a reputation for suggestive songs and in the 40s that was quite outstanding for a black blues singer. She was also a talented musician and piano player - she was definitely a trailblazer - great selection or rarities.

Thanks for the great research! In 1982 Charly Records Ltd. produced a compilation feat. her most remarkable singles. One of them was KING SIZE PAPA. Liner notes by Sally-Ann Worsfold. I’m sharing the first paragraph from her essay as the compilation was the source for this mix. "During her lifetime Julia Lee was an unjustly undervalued and neglected artist who since her death in 1958 has been virtually forgotten. This long overdue compilation will therefore be welcomed by her many staunch admirers and should also serve to introduce Miss Lee to a new generation of listeners". …. source: JULIA LEE, TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT, Charly R&B, CRB1039, 1982.
