Kingston, Jamaica
Silver Hawk Sound is the brain child of veteran producers, the late Wycliffe 'Steely' Johnson (R.I.P.) and his musical partner Cleveland 'Clevie' Browne.
The sound got its name from Steely's motorbike named Hawk. The sound came alive in the second part of the '80s, the heyday of sound clashes in Jamaica.
The original crew included selectors Balsie and Jerry and manager Collin Fat. Because of Steely & Clevie's dominant position as session musicians and producers, Silver Hawk was one of the leading sound systems in the era when live DJs and singers on sounds were replaced by dubplate specials. Steely managed to get dubplate specials that up until this day rank amongst the wickedest and most exclusive specials ever cut. Silver Hawk was one of the first sound systems to cut foundation artists on dub. With their highly exclusive dub box, the crew led by Steely and Jerry soon built up a solid reputation in the Kingston dancehalls and far abroad.
