SEÑOR PACHANGA — Afro-global sounds, told from the American port.

I was born in Cali, the salsa capital of the world, an hour and a half from Buenaventura — Colombia's Black Pacific port. That's where I learned what I play: Johannesburg's amapiano, Lagos' afrobeats, Kingston's dancehall, Rio's baile funk, Palenque's champeta, the Pacific's currulao and my own city's salsa are all the same root arriving through different ports.

Champeta exists because sailors from Cartagena brought African vinyl back on the boat. That's not a metaphor — it's port history.
