Directly addressed to a close friend. Excerpt from letter enclosed in liner notes:
As you are aware, a few years ago during a discussion while en route to a friend’s apartment, you revealed to me your belief that hip-hop of that era (~1997) was inherently inferior to hip-hop of our youth (~1980-1990)... While I agreed with your assessment of most (not all) of the mainstream rap singles of the day, I mentioned that you might be overlooking some quality hip-hop offerings by failing to expend the effort necessary to acquire and enjoy “underground” or “indie” singles and LPs. You were unconvinced.
To date I have made two concerted efforts to sway your opinion, with varying results. Enclosed please find the third and definitive attempt entitled “Hip-Hop vs. Jerry Thompson: Third Round Knockout.”
