Broadcasting at weekends in the late summer of 1971 with Paul Gee & Keith Rowe,, Always run by a small number of volunteers, a weeknight schedule commenced in Feb/Mar 1980. Programmes could be heard through a vast series of speakers throughout the buildings, not only in the Wards but in communal areas such as the Staff Restaurant, Coffee Bar, Patients' Club (where the station originally broadcast from), laundry, kitchens and numerous Occupation Therapy departments and so on... Friern Hospital was eventually sold to make way for the Grade II listed buildings to be transformed internally into luxury apartments renamed 'Princess Park Manor'. Radio Friern ceased in March 1993 with the hospital closing at the end of that month. In the new Millennium, most of the presenters heard on these recordings have reunited, meeting up regularly.
