Charnissa, named after her mother, started singing at the age of 12 even though music was a part of her life early on. From a non-musical family, her mother was an original "Sweetheart of Soul" who sang background for Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles to name a few. By high school, she was serious about music and along with her friends formed a four-girl singing group (Daphney Powers, Carmelita Jones, and RahShannah Farley) that performed at various talent shows and events around Detroit. The group split by graduation and Charnissa took a break to study Computer Science/MIS at Central Michigan University. She returned home to reunite with the group and try it again.
