Joni Mitchell first came to my attention, strumming along to Big Yellow Taxi on Top Of The Pops nearly half a century ago, I wasn't a fan. It was a catchy enough tune and it had a "message" but to my ears it was pure pop with no soul. I soon changed my mind when I chanced upon "Court And Spark". I played that album to death, it had everything I love about music, beautiful haunting melodies, first rate musicianship, lush string arrangements. I became a big fan and followed her career ever since. She's certainly a gifted person, poet, painter, musician, song writer, lyricist, but in her latter years she has become a wonderful vocalist. The sometimes harsh edge to her voice in her youth has smoothed with time and aged like a vintage wine. Now deep, mellow, fluid and full of soul. She tired of the industry and became a painter for a spell. Coaxed out of her studio, she produced two wonderful albums with string section, showcasing her wonderful vocal qualities. Enjoy and be moved.
