In the film 'High Fidelity' (2000), a record store owner, played by John Cusack, begins a 'name your top five <fill in the blank>'-music game with his top five album openers; his list is as follows: "Janie Jones", "Let's Get It On", "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "White Light/White Heat", and "Radiation Ruling The Nation". An employee of said record store, played by Jack Black, replies with sarcasm: "[Massive Attack?] Kind of a new record. Very nice, Rob - a sly declaration of new classic status slipped into a list of old safe ones. ... Couldn't you be any more obvious that? I don't know, The Beatles? How 'bout Beethoven - track 1/side 1 of the 5th symphony? How can someone who has no interest in music own a record store?". I feel this chide - "a sly declaration of new classic status" - neatly sums up my project. Eclecticism in one's taste doesn't equate with disinterest. On the contrary. Hear and judge for yourself.
