Johnny was immersed in funky music as a child when his older sister Karen started bringing home 45's by James Brown, Aretha Franklin & The Isley Brothers. He became a disco DJ in the late 70's at Madison's Cardinal Bar and wrote columns about music, sports & the arts for Isthmus & Milwaukee Shepherd Express. Shivers also spent a year as the Rap Music Editor for Night Sites & Sounds.

He returned to college in the late 90's at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, earning a BA in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Africology.

The DJ Johnny Rasta currently resides in his hometown of Madison, WI.
