Let's Get Outta Here! theme mixtape
This month's theme is "I'm Stuck / Let's Get Outta Here." This mixtape originally started with "I'm leaving town" songs, but that net was cast too wide -- there are a lot of jilted lovers and heartbroken Romeos who want to get away. Looking more closely, I realized the songs I liked best weren't the heartbreak songs, they were the fed-up-with-it-all songs, and the singers usually wanted someone to explicitly escape WITH them. That made the winnowing much easier, resulting in an hour-long mixtape of songs about people who feel stuck where they are, and who want to get out with someone they care about.
From the bitter life story of "Book of Days" by the Psychedelic Furs, to Bob Dylan's expose, in "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again," of a man accepting that he is joining the ranks of the vagrants and characters in town, to the optimistic "Two Divided By Zero" by Pet Shop Boys or "What We Live For" by American Authors, we run the full course of the desire to get out, to go somewhere else -- anywhere else.
Normally, this would be a select-only mixtape for my subscribers, but I'm leaving it free until I post my next theme in about six weeks -- see what kind of bonus theme mixtapes you're missing by not subscribing!
