Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a bladder condition that usually consists of multiple symptoms including but not limited to, recurring pelvic pain, pressure, or discomfort in the bladder and pelvic region, and urinary frequency and urgency. IC may also be referred to as painful bladder syndrome (PBS), bladder pain syndrome (BPS), and chronic pelvic pain. The cause of IC is not completely understood. Many patients with IC may suffer for years prior to receiving a diagnosis of IC. Early diagnosis and prompt initiation of treatment may translate into better symptom control and improved outcomes for patients with IC.
