Hailing from Hackensack, New Jersey, James McDonnell has been DJing over 40 years; an interest which started after his first exposure to early Hip Hop. "The first time I ever saw someone scratch mixing with someone rapping over the breakbeats... I was blown away! I mean it was the most underground thing I'd ever seen!" he laughs. "I started teaching myself how to beatmix and scratch when I finally had money to get my own equipment, when I joined the Army." (1982-1988)
Why House Music?
"Well, after the late 80s to early 90s, Hip Hop just got... polluted; just basically glorifying Thug Culture, and I just wasn't into it; But House Music touches my soul everytime I hear it."
Who or what is your biggest House influences?
"DJs Tony Humphries, Louie Vega, and David Morales have definitely shaped my sound back then, and even how I play today."
