Born in1978 in the Highbridge section of the Bronx. A son of the Puerto Rican diaspora, Hernaiz’roots hail from Santurce, Puerto Rico, a rich, creative well in one of Puerto Rico’s most dynamic urban hubs. Inspired by his Afro-Boricua heritage, spiritual traditions, and the raw, lively terrain of his Bronxvillage, Hernaiz’ work reflects a bold, eclectic sensibility.
Hernaiz fuses bold Bronx landscapes, symbols, and icons with the warm, lushhues of the tropics and the deep, resonant tones of the spirit world. From the mystical marketplace of the botanica, to the cement platforms of theelevated train, Hernaiz captures Caribbean New York, urban America, and themany manifestations of the intersecting sacred and profane in daily life, withpoignant accuracy. Moved by histories ofstruggle and resistance through politics, prayer, and public protest, Hernaizcaptures the sacredness of everyday life with his tools.
