David Zhou Brings East And Southeast Asian Music Forward On Mixcloud’s Podcast Series

The Co-Founder and Director of Eastern Margins is the latest guest on Mixcloud Presents: The Inside Track.

In the fifth episode of Mixcloud Presents: The Inside Track, Mixcloud Co-Founder and CEO Nico Perez is joined by creator and record label head David Zhou.

Based in London, David Zhou is the Co-Founder and Director of Eastern Margins, a music collective for alternative East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) culture.

Launched in 2018, Eastern Margins is a record label and event series bringing the musical stories of the Asian continent and diaspora to the forefront.

In 2024, the platform launched Margins United – the first music festival of its kind in Europe – celebrating the diversity and vibrancy of ESEA music, food and art.

David talks about his musical journey after moving to the UK from China, the birth of Eastern Margins and finding belonging in rave culture.

Later, he discusses the economics of running a record label, music licensing in ESEA, championing local scenes in the region and the power of predicting cultural trends.
