Japanese persimmons, Diospyros kaki L., were introduced into the USA from Japan by Admiral Perry who uncovered the fruit growing on the shore of Southern Japan in 1851.
The majority of the very early Japanese persimmon introductions in 1828 were sprouted from seed in Washington, DC, but were unsuccessful, due to the unusually cool winters experienced during that period.
