The Phonic

I remember at four years old, listening to “Rapper’s Delight” on my dad’s 8-track player, and him explaining how the music came from a disco song entitled, “Good Times.” Right then I was hooked… the sample made me fall in love with hip-hop. Ten years later, I’m recording eight hour VHS tapes of “Yo! MTV Raps” after school, because in the suburbs that was my only exposure to hip-hop. Fast forward a little further and now I’m buying my first drum machine and sampler to make my very own beats. From the first album I ever bought, Slick Rick’s “The Great Adventures of…” on cassette, to my ever expanding collection of vinyl, it was always finding the sample that made me love this music so very much.
This mix is my little tribute to west coast gangsta rap & all the wonderful funk and soul records they sampled. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it...
