I’m almost 60 years old, and I’m not too old to rave.
One of my first raves was at 23 Hop in the early 1990s. No phones. No branding. No influencers — just promoters, music, bodies, and a feeling I’d never known. The crowd mattered as much as the DJs. Peace and love wasn’t a slogan; it was how things worked. Fights were rare. Ecstasy existed, but connection was the real high.
Working behind the scenes at CFNY, Energy 108, and Hot 103 became my gateway to techno. Radio didn’t chase culture — it helped create it. Trips to the New Music Seminar in NYC made that clear, where rave culture, radio, and Club Kids collided. You could feel something being born.
I produced for Chris Sheppard on syndicated shows and CD releases and spent long nights at venues that became legends: RPM, The Warehouse, The Guvernment, Factory, OZ. I chased parties across Toronto, Montreal, NYC, Detroit, and Orlando.
This was built before social media.
Before mobile phones.
Before PLUR had a name — but it was real.
