There's been a lot of DJ discourse lately focusing on the recent trend for higher tempo productions and DJ sets. Consider the main section of this week's episode a demonstration of my two cents on the topic: higher tempos don't mean you can't have interesting arrangements and sound design - and in fact a higher tempo doesn't even mean you have to be obliterated by maximal sonic density - there's room for bangers, but also hypnotic tracks and esoteric weirdness and a spacious mixdown to boot. You don't even have to sacrifice a good groove or interesting rhythmic licks either. And to the club promoters out there: spend less time chasing trends and only book DJs you trust with your dancefloors. A DJ worth their performance fee will know when to crank the tempo up and when to dial it back. 🔊
