he University of Cape Town Muslim Youth Movement (UCT MYM) is a student organisation which seeks a progressive and humanist interpretation of Islam, focusing on authentic inclusion of marginalised groups and social justice activism. Our dynamic and socially responsive vision of Islam has been shaped by the current global dialogue defining the Muslim identity, where extremist and Islamophobic sentiments have perpetuated an increasingly negative perception of Islam. We strive toward a more empowered, compassionate and just South African, as well as global, society.
We aim to show commitment to Islam through a constant critical engagement with the Qur’an (as a primary source of guidance) and authentic Prophetic Tradition (as a secondary source). We believe that as conscientious Muslims, responsible South African citizens, and active students, we have a duty in striving for social justice for all based on the academic lens of intersectionality.
