Classic calypso recordings from the 1950s and '60s. Before the birth of ska, rocksteady, and reggae, calypso music provided the soundtrack to the Windrush generation's early days in Britain. Artists like Lord Kitchener, Mighty Terror, Lord Invader, Roaring Lion, and Lord Beginner made the Atlantic voyage and found work singing about their new lives in Britain. Included also are recordings from Trinidad and Jamaica which provide social commentary on racism, politics, crime, and carnival culture. History has forgotten many of these calypsonians, but their work is a fascinating time capsule of Caribbean songwriting, composition, and working class philosophy.
