Toronto, Canada
It all started with Brave New Waves. I heard a "band" that was experimenting with music from the sound of breaking glass and slamming doors and I ran out to the local record shop and special ordered my first electronic music tape: The Art of Noise. No one in my town was listening to this stuff, which made it pretty hard to find new sounds, so you really had to research and dig. Slowly I gathered tapes including FSOL, The Orb, Aphex Twin, and Utah Saints. I started going to these crazy parties in Vancouver, then Victoria, BC called "raves". Here's how it went.
You would go to a record shop, they would have fliers for parties with a phone number on them that would be out of service until the day of the show. When the day came you would get a recording telling you where to go, only to find a shuttle bus waiting for you. All very secret, very fun. I was hooked.
Although the scene and culture has changed dramatically (as have my preferences of genres), I still can't shake the music.
