Ankara oyun havalari, or "dance music from Ankara", Turkey's administrative capital. Music you can hear in bars, restaurants, clubs and on wedding parties, often accompanied by men doing line dances and making rattling sounds with wooden table spoons. This modern interpretation of traditional Central Anatolian saz music has a fuzzy electric touch and beats programmed on digital work stations. A true fusion of folk and pop, of old and new, kind of similar in approach as modern Lebanese and Syrian "dabke" or Moroccan "chaabi".
For this mixtape, the selection criteria were the psychedelic touch of the omnipresent electric saz, drenched in fuzz and phaser modulation and a more straightforward 4/4 signature, at a down tempo (90-100 bpm).
Credit goes to my collegue Meral Uzek, who bought this music for me in Turkey in the summer of 2011.
