From the smoke and mists of Western Kingston, we proudly present our 4th mix of the “Foundation” series.
Vivian Jackson, alias Yabby You, Jesus Dread, Conquering Lion, was born to a Garveyist father and dressmaking mother in 1946. Along with his six siblings, Jackson entered a world of desperate poverty, his early years clouded by malnutrition and pneumonia. But it would seem that out of such intense hardship came an ability to attain staggering musical heights. Inspired by a mystical encounter in which Jackson claimed he heard angels singing, he recorded his first single in 1972, with the help of Horsemouth, Familyman and Chinna Smith. Throughout the roots era and beyond, Jackson created a unique sound which, whilst rooted in dread, spoke of his Christian beliefs.
This journey through Jackson's music leads us through the slums of Western Kingston, through the hills and valleys, and ultimately to another place somewhere deep in the consciousness of the man they call: Jesus Dread.
