You know, I've been a DJ, in one way or another, since I was like, 13 years old. I know I'm tellin' on myself, but that means 1985, lol! YES, I am THAT OLD! Music was EVERYTHING to me, as it is now. I mean hangin' on for every mixshow, calling my NY and NJ cousins to get them to mail me mixtapes of all the hot ish because where I lived in NC at the time, let's just say radio stations were a little slow to catch on to Hiphop in its earlier days.
Now, it's 2024 (DAYUMMMMM), and the term "DJ" could literally mean anything from someone just pressing PLAY with no blends, scratches, or mixes apparent, to guys who produce original tracks featuring some of THE biggest names in the music game today.
For a guy with literally NO BUSINESS being called anything close to "famous", DJing has afforded me some INCREDIBLE opportunities, from spinning tracks in front of THOUSANDS of people, to DJing privately for names like Too $hort, Fiji, Mike Epps, and others. I've had the pleasure of meeting some people I've idolized over the years like Wyclef Jean, Treach from Naughty By Nature, Lil Rob, Honey Cocaine, DJ Premier, DJ Ready Redd, DJ Carisma, Webbie, Gyptian, Ziggy Marley, and Pato Banton.
I've been to the highest of the high, to the lowest of the low when I couldn't BUY a gig. I've lost girlfriends and friends to this world of beats, rhymes, and microphones, but you know what? I wouldn't change a STROKE!
People worry about so many things these days. If you're a DJ, or aspiring to be one, here's my advice: focus on pleasing the people on the other side of your turntables, and let the rest worry about itself.
You'll breathe much easier, and you'll enjoy more blessings!
