Legend has it that one day Shiva came across Krishna bathing in the Ganges and was so incensed with jealousy at Krishna's beauty that he fired off an arrow at him. It found its mark but was not fatal. The wounded Krishna clambered out the river to safety and the first ganga plant is said to have sprouted from a spot on the bank at which a drop of his divine blood fell.
