Radio Eclectus #95: Xenakis & Schafer (Aug. 26, 2021)

00:00

Radio Eclectus bids farewell to R. Murray Schafer, whose promotion of acoustic ecology influenced composers as diverse as John Luther Adams and Hildegard Westerkamp. We also honor the 50th anniversary of Iannis Xenakis's Persepolis, a precursor of today's noise and industrial music, which we demonstrate by juxtaposing it with offerings by Merzbow, Otomo Yoshihide, Xiu Xiu and Black Leather Jesus. Throughout the program we emphasize how the avant-garde's response to today's sensory overload often takes the form of music that's extremely soft and slow, or alternatively, music that's extremely loud and harsh.

We also have new releases to enjoy: Gabriel Prokofiev, Enno Poppe, Roger Reynolds, Elisabeth Harnik, Aloïs Yang, Three-Layer Cake and the duo of Lao Dan & Boyu Deng. We've even got an obscure late work by Hindemith that's just been recorded for the first time. Radical new music from the Northwest and beyond with host Michael Schell.
