Radio Eclectus #83: Harps & accordions (Mar. 11, 2021)

Avatar

Accordions are in the spotlight. And harps. And Haas and Mimaroğlu. We preview three new albums of contemporary accordion music (featuring premiere recordings of works by Magnus Lindberg and Poul Ruders), listen to harp pieces by Hannah Lash, Rhodri Davies and Anthony Braxton (with Jacqueline Kerrod), and savor the Arditti Quartet’s premiere recording of an important microtonal string quartet by Georg Friedrich Haas. We also honor record producer, electronic musician and cigarette enthusiast İlhan Mimaroğlu on what would have been his 95th birthday, contemplating his legacy in the form of new electroacoustic tracks from Peru, Belgium, Kyrgyzstan and Los Angeles. Some unusual improv, choral and carillon pieces from Tatsuya Nakatani, Shane Parish, Stephen Rush, Fire! and Eugene Birman round out the program. Radical new music from the Northwest and beyond with host Michael Schell.
